Overhead Clearance, Radius, Load.Bolt-tensioning is a technique to reach high and precise tension forces into long studs or bolts. This method is used mostly when residual tensions don’t exceed 80% of the yield point, when galling may occur, when stud's torsion is possible, when studs are not too short, when loading factor is important. The tensioning unit is expressed in kN (kilo-Newton) or psi or Ksi (1000 x psi) . (psi = pound per square inch). To transfer loading forces into studs or bolts (hundreds of tons per element), hydraulic tensioners and hydraulic nuts are the two most classic methods, using hydraulic pressure.
Bolt-tensioning requires a high level of safety and a b procedure. The required hydraulic pressure on the hydraulic pump doesn't allow us to get the residual load directly. During the load's transfer from tensioners to bolts, part of this load disappears. In addition, the stud's load is not directly measurable. The stud's elongation is, most of the time, the only way to calculate the stud's load. You need to consider that the measurement of a stud is complex. From that point, you will understand that the bolt-tensioning crew needs to be professional and certified, the equipment needs to be perfect and the procedure strict.
